Herakleia is one of Karia's most romantic ancient cities. It takes its name from the mythological hero Hercules. Dating to the 8th century BC, the city was once a port town — but the ancient Latmos Gulf gradually filled with alluvium from the Meander River. Today it overlooks not the sea, but Lake Bafa.\n\nThe city was enclosed by walls 6.5 km in length — a defense system from the Hellenistic period, reinforced with 65 towers. The precisely hewn rectangular and square stones showcase the fine stonework of the era.\n\nThings to see:\n\n• Temple of Athena: The best-preserved structure of the ancient city; built in the \"Templum in Antis\" style. Located within the village, among living homes.\n• Agora: The city's central square, partially standing.\n• Tombs and monasteries: Byzantine-period structures; as the city lost its importance when it moved away from the sea, it became a refuge for Christian monks.\n• Temple of Endymion: According to Latmos legend, a sanctuary dedicated to Endymion, a shepherd beloved by Selene, the moon goddess, who was cast into eternal sleep on the mountain.\n\nHerakleia's uniqueness lies in this: ancient ruins are interwoven with the village of Kapıkırı. Villagers farm their gardens beside ancient columns, houses sit atop temples, streets pass through the agora. In other words, this is not a \"museum ancient city,\" but a living one.\n\nBehind Lake Bafa stand the Beşparmak (Latmos) Mountains, known in antiquity as the Latmos Mountains. Rock carvings dating back 6,000 years BC found on these peaks are traces of prehistoric settlement in the Karian region.
