"Zahire" means dried grain and provisions; this market takes its name from the grain trading that once took place here. This small cluster of 14 historic shops, dating from the Ottoman period, has been carefully restored while remaining faithful to its original character.\n\nToday it houses a café and a few souvenir shops. The surrounding area is quiet and intimate; 15–20 minutes is enough time to explore. But there's something you absolutely must try at the café here: Turkish coffee made in the sand.\n\nWatching the copper pot slowly foam in the hot sand is a ritual in itself; moreover, this is a living part of Muğla's coffee tradition, which has been unbroken since the 16th century. When the pot is buried in the sand, at first there is silence; then gradually you'll hear a gentle rumble — that means the coffee is almost ready.
