Ortaçağ Menteşe

Muğla Ulu Camii

Built in 1334 as the work of Menteşe Bey İbrahim Bey. Muğla's oldest structure, featuring ashlar stone and wooden roof architecture under Seljuk influence.

Located in the Tabakhane district, Ulu Camii is the oldest structure of Menteşe — and of Muğla itself. It was commissioned in 1334 by Menteşe Bey İbrahim Bey; that is, it has a history spanning over 690 years. This makes it one of Turkey's oldest mosques from the Beylik period.\n\nThe building carries Seljuk architectural influence, constructed from ashlar stone with a single-minaret tower. Its roof is entirely wooden — a significant feature in 14th-century Anatolian mosque architecture. In 1938, it was restored by the local notable Abdizade Bey, with its original architecture carefully preserved; during this restoration, the congregation area and ablution facilities were added.\n\nThe mosque's original inscription still remains in place — one of the period's rare epigraphic documents.
