Iasos was Caria's gateway to the sea. This ancient city, extending like a peninsula into the Gulf of Güllük, has been a harbor and trade center since the 8th century BCE. According to its founding legend, it was established by seafarers from Argos; thus it was a cosmopolitan city tied to the Greek world, yet bearing the marks of Carian culture as well.\n\nThe main structures you can see in the city:\n\n• Ancient Theater: Nestled into the hillside, remarkably well preserved. Statue bases are still visible on its stage.\n• Agora: The city's central plaza.\n• Mausoleum: Remains of a monumental tomb structure.\n• City walls: From the Hellenistic period.\n• Hilltop fortress: At the highest point of the peninsula; a 30-minute climb to the summit, with a view that is literally breathtaking.\n\nIasos is also known in modern times for its fishing. In antiquity, Iasos fish were exported all the way to Rome; today traditional fishing still continues in the village of Kıyıkışlacık. The harbor cafés and restaurants around the ancient city are ideal for lunch: seaside setting, fresh fish, with a 2,500-year-old city at your feet.\n\nAt the entrance to Iasos, there's even a small ruin of an ancient fishery—so the city's identity has barely changed from ancient times to today.
