Gümbet adını, Muğla yöresinde halk arasında 'kümbet/gümbet' denilen kubbe biçimli su sarnıçlarından alır. Osmanlı döneminde yapılan bu sarnıçlar, su bulunmayan yerlerde yağmur suyunu toplamak için kullanılır; genellikle 7-10 metre çapında dairesel bir duvar üzerine küresel kubbeyle örülürdü. Bölgede ilk sarnıçların yapımının Kanuni Sultan Süleyman'ın 1522 Rodos seferi dönemine dayandığı yörede anlatılır (rivayet). Bu yapılar bölgenin simgesi olmuş ve mahalleye adını vermiştir.
